I love watching orchestral music continue to expand its horizons into non-classical genres and open the door to broader audiences. When Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony released S&M in 1999, it blew my mind, and the first time I watched Harry Potter with a live orchestra in a sold out concert hall, I was surprised and moved by the way audience members of all ages were totally enthralled by the magic of happening between the screen and the stage. But as a lifelong lover of hip-hop and rap, watching Kendrick Lamar perform with the NSO ten years ago remains one of my favorite concert experiences ever.
