What I’m Reading This Week: July 22, 2025

Hej hej! Back from vacation and catching up on what I’ve missed…

Zach Woolfe will be taking on a new role after serving as chief classical music critic in a surprising Culture Desk shuffle at the New York Times. Given the Times’s drive towards video and other experimental formats over the last five or so years, I’ll be very interested to see who will replace Woolfe.

“Can this guy save classical recording?” asks an article written by a white man about a white man who talks exclusively about (mostly dead) white men. Excuse me while I go scream into the void.

Happy 100th birthday to Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, cellist and founding member of the English Chamber Orchestra and the last surviving member of the Women’s Orchestra of Auschwitz.

RIP, Roger Norrington.

It is the end of an era at Imani Winds as founding member, Toyin Spellman-Diaz has performed her last concert with the influential ensemble. Congratulations to Toyin as she moves into this exciting new chapter of her career, and a warm welcome to new oboist, Mekhi Gladden.

Greatly disappointed that there is not a single “Bach Choy” pun anywhere in this news story about the positive impact of classical music on plant growth.
