What I’m Reading this Week: September 8, 2024

Sasha Weiss’ NYT Magazine piece about Ezra Edelman’s ill-fated epic documentary about Prince. Edelman’s painstakingly researched passion project attempted to pull the curtain back on one of music’s most enigmatic geniuses – which is why it may never see the light of day. A fascinating look Edelman’s work and the man behind some of the most iconic American pop music ever created.

Xian Zhang will become the first female and person of color music director in Seattle Symphony’s 121-year history. Zhang, who has been lauded for her work with the New Jersey Symphony, will be one of only two women leading a top-tier American orchestra (the other being Nathalie Stutzmann of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra) when she takes up her new position next year.

Berlin Philharmonic concertmaster announces her departure less than two years after her appointment. Latvian violinist Vineta Sareika shared the news via her Facebook page, where she wrote, “‘One of the many valuable learnings during the past years however is that being part of this particular orchestra is not the path I’d like to continue on in the future.” Sareika broke barriers as the first female concertmaster in the history of the famed orchestra.
